The real problem with magic right now is the most popular format is commander. if we look at the cost of standard staples from back in the beginning and adjust it for inflation is actually possibly cheaper now then back in the day to play standard. yes cards are more expensive but everything is. I think the affordability of magic as a hobby has not really changed. People will only get burned so many times before it feels awful enough to stop drafting, even if they otherwise would like to do more.Ī set with identical EV's, with one made of ultra high end 100$+ cards, and one where it's an absurd amount of 10-30$ cards, will feel vastly different in terms of the variance of opening packs Meanwhile people around me were opening full art Wrens, Imperial Seals, etc. I went 2-1 in all three of my drafts and never walked away with a card worth more than $12 or so, and only one of them.
The other problem is so much of the EV is in crazy high-end stuff, which means many more people will walk away with effectively nothing worth more than a few dollars. Hostage Taker + play their card + blink Hostage Taker, repeat, feels INCREDIBLE. The cards that are both terrible value-wise AND bad in draft are the inexcusable ones. Lavalanch, Hostage Taker, Judith are all amazing draft build-arounds. r/magicTCG is not produced, endorsed, supported by, or affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
